Setting Up Final Grade Weighting in PowerGrade

Categories:
Broad classifications into which you place assignments. Some common categories could be Quizzes, Tests, Projects, and Homework.

You must have at least on category so you can enter assignments, both in PowerGrade and in PowerSchool Teacher. You can have as many categories as you wish.

Important Information on Weighting

Grade calculations may be made in several ways. Choose the methods that suites your method of grading.

Total Points
When using Total Points, the student's final grade is calculated by the number of points earned divided by the number of possible points over the term. All you need is one category such as Assignments or Tasks. Each assignment within that one category will be given a set number of points to be counted towards the total. For an example click here.

Category Points
The final grade is calculated by assigning percentages to each category, such as Quizzes - 15%, Tests - 25%, etc. The total must equal 100%. For an example click here. To download a worksheet for planning Categories, click here.

Single Assignment
One assignment such as a final exam may be weighted using this method. It may be the only assignment given or it may be used along with Total Points or Category Points, however the grade may wind up being counted twice, once in the test category and again as a single assignment. It is usually better to create a separate category for that assignment, such as a Final Exam category, and then assign a specified weight to that category. For an example click here.

Percent From Another Final Grade
Many people want to arrive at a grade for a longer term by doing a calculation using grades from shorter terms. For instance, they may want to calculate a yearlong final grade by averaging the final grades of each semester. For an example click here.
